Lady Gaga conspiracy theories (I used up all my puns on the article)

Today’s post is just a few small things I’ve found regarding Lady Gaga over the last couple of days.

First off is this bizarre and unintentionally hilarious page which is all about how Lady Gaga is an Illuminati puppet (remember them from that shitty Tom Hanks sequel to the Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons?). Yeah, well they guy who wrote this page believes that Lady Gaga (along with other pop stars like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Beyonce and Taylor Swift) are being controlled by the Illuminati to brainwash people with occult symbolism. Funnily enough, he never explains quite why he thinks a pop star would want to put occult brainwashing messages in a video clip (and he never, ever explains how having occult symbolism in a video is meant to actually brainwash someone), I can see them wanting hidden messages in their stuff saying “Buy my shit!” (although I doubt it’s really effective, even if it’s possible) but this is not that at all.

Buy my shit!

Even more hilarious are the comments on the article, which seem to be written by and large by bible-bashing, redneck, fundamentalist Christians. They seem to be very clear on why there would be occult messages in video clips (“It’s Satan!! ZOMG! Trying to corrupt out children! The end times!”) but again they never explain what Lady Gaga is getting out of it. I mean, if you’re a world famous pop star with sold out shows around the world, making millions of dollars, the number one thing on your to-do list is converting everyone to Satanism right? Because thats in your interests isn’t it? Oh right, it isn’t. Ok, so the Christians are just batshit crazy then. Good, glad thats finally sorted. There’s several articles on that site about Lady Gaga, all of them retarded, and I even found a link in the comments to another site that claimed definitively that Lady Gaga was a witch. Like, they had the proof that she was flying around on a broomstick or something. I dunno, I didn’t bother reading it.

Lady Gaga - the early years

That said, after all my retard-bashing, it is interesting to notice that although the author of the article is mentally deficient, he has (in his own paranoid way) picked up on symbolism that Lady Gaga does employ during her performances. And it’s quite interesting as it’s stuff that I (and I’m guessing most people) wouldn’t have picked up on by watching it once (it’s not like I’m watching her video clips over and over, admiring her lack of clothes and suggestive dance moves or anything). One of the biggest things that was pointed out was her use of covering one eye, which can be interpreted any which way (like it just being stylistically a cool look). The author of the article suggests that she is giving the sign of the great seal (you know the pyramid with the eye in it) which is meant to be a symbol of the Illuminati.

Evil Incarnate

There’s other stuff there as well, and as I said, although I don’t agree with the conclusions drawn by the author (because, you know, he’s spewing crazy juice everywhere like a hobo that just drank a bottle of methylated spirits) there’s definitely more to her videos than dance moves and pop music, and if I had to hazard a guess, it would be that she employs strong symbolism that subconsciously one starts to recognize as her “look”, even though it’s hard to put your finger on what that look is. Having a design background, a lot of brands do the same thing whereby they create a lot of small details that when seen in context evoke a particular look or style that is associated with the brand, but is hard for a casual observer to put their finger on (and therefore creates more value in the eyes of the consumer because it’s that much harder to emulate, and that much more “authentic”). Think of Michael Jackson. He was more than just a pop singer and became a phenomenon because he defined himself as someone different from “the rest” by his look, his clothes (the glove, the white socks, etc), and especially his dance moves. He created iconic dance moves that either only he could do, or if someone else did do them, it was clear they were simply copying him. Of course not everyone is capable of creating incredible dance moves, so the next best thing is to create other “moves” that you get known for. In this case it’s kind of hard to make covering your eye a something that only you can do (anyone can do that, it’s just that no one thinks to), so the way to get around that is to do it subtly so that no one notices your doing it, but still subconciously recognise it as your style when it’s done.

Bitch stole my look!

Another good example is the G-Star brand (you knew I was gonna bring that one up didn’t you?), which is generally fairly recognizable due to it’s distinctive design and branding. I’ve seen other brands try and copy the “look”, Industrie being a major offender, and when you see it you realize that it is a copy of a look, but again, it’s hard to say why it’s a copy and not the original article, and it’s because it’s missing details that consciously you’re not even aware of. Everyone knows Lady Gaga has crazy cool outfits, but it’s also the way she acts, the things that she does that contibute to her image or “brand” as it were. So yeah, that’s my non crazy person interpretation of it.

just your regular jeans and a tshirt...

Sorry for going on and on, I got onto a bit of a roll there.

Anyway, to end on a less insane and more lighthearted note: pictures! (thats what this blog is all about anyway, not bloody essays!). Specifically, some more cool outfits as worn by Lady Gaga who is becoming more and more my favorite pop star.

^^ those are fucking monitors on her glasses…how freaking cool is that?

^^ this ones less hot, still awesome for being so out there though.

Winter fashion trends

It’s been a while since I’ve done a proper article so I thought today would be a good day to do one 🙂

So, as you may have gathered by now I work at G-Star RAW. We’ve just got our new autumn/winter collection come in and I was rather surprised to see that a major theme of the collection was a Canadian/outdoors/lumberjack type of vibe. I must say it took me by surprise. Lots of checks, lots of flannel, lots of dark reds and mossy greens (the dark red color used this season is even referred to as “ox blood” color for extra brute-ness). The collection name in case you’re wondering is called Bronco, and a lot of it looks something like this:

Anyway so the reason I mention it is because I’m in the southern hemisphere, where we are 6 months behind the northern hemisphere, meaning they would have had this collection about 6 months ago. And I happened to be reading the New York Time’s blog on fashion when I came across something interesting: this. It seems that G-Star isn’t the only one with lumberjack dreams but unless I’m way off they must have come up with this long before anyone else did. Even if they didn’t, they managed to bring it out a lot sooner than anyone else has.

I know it’s summer now, but the lesson to take away from this is that this winter, Canadian lumberjacks are IN. Start growing your beards! Ladies too!

Meggings! Jacket! Shiny!

I’M SO FUCKING EXCITED!! Sorry, but I had to get that out of the way. I just couldn’t think of another way to start this post either, I’m not very creative. Why so excited, you ask? Well for several very good reasons actually, read on to find out ALL about it (in excruciating detail that no one cares for except for your truly).

Thanks to the advice of a mate, I went to Cotton On and bought myself a pair of meggings, something I’ve been meaning to do for quite a while. First off, they were only $25 so straight away really really cheap (compared to skinny jeans etc) and good value no matter how much or little I wear them. I make a point of that, if I’m trying a new look I’ll get the signature piece cheap and that way if it doesn’t pan out (I can’t make it work) it doesn’t really affect my bank balance anyway. No up front investment required. Good advice that.

I must say the experience of crossing over from the mens side of the store to the women’s side is odd (and somewhat intimidating), and I think my brother summed it up best when he described it as you “feeling like people will think you’re a pervert”. That’s exactly what it feels like too, that  you’re a pervert for wanting to wear women’s clothes and everyone’s looking at you and judging you and thinking “what a pervert”. I probably am though.

So I got the meggings and they’re fucking awesome, I dont think I’ve been this happy with a clothing purchase in ages (apart from all the other clothing I bought recently, they’re my best purchases in ages). They’re just a basic black wet look pair of tights and first thing that guys should know about women’s tights is that they are really comfortable (I’m wearing them now) and based on this and other observations I’m going to say that girls get all the best clothes. Also whenever I go into a store with women’s and mens clothing I prefer to check out the women’s stuff, mostly because of how it’s all shiny, but also because it’s all so much more interesting and exciting. And I miss that, I used to get it, that excitement when you had discovered a new style or look or whatever and how it opened up this whole vista of possibilities and you’d get this giddy feeling of excitement. Actually that perfectly sums up my first impression of the G-Star collection when it was first launched in Australia and I first saw it advertised (in mX if I remember rightly), it was like someone had reinvented jeans and we were on the forefront of a clothing revolution. Obviously that never happened and there are still bumpkins in the sticks wearing their Billabong jeans but I guess I got a bit swept up but I miss that feeling all the same. I get the same thing every now and again when I see a film or read a book or discover something new and exciting and fresh and unique. So this is the first item of clothing I’ve got to go toward my new style I want to pioneer, a mighty fusion of metal/glam/rocker looks into one sexy package (me, believe it or not).

I’ve also been wanting for a while now to grab a jacket that’s light and shiny, dressy so I can wear it out at night, or on cool days, and that’s smart and flexible. Also shiny, did I mention that? And I found this jacket at work, (G-Star, of course), it’s called the new tech jacket and its shiny electric blue, literally sex with sleeves (oh and pockets). So I’m pretty excited about that. To properly illustrate why I’m so excited I will now include pictures to inspire (and to make you jealous).

Credit to Topas for taking the happy snaps.

Also, before I go, the boots are on their way. They should be here already but due to a mishap it’ll be another two weeks or so. Hold tight, and there’ll definitely be more posts before that. Until then enjoy 🙂

Fashion picks!

So its been a little while since I’ve posted and theres a few things that have caught my eye that I NEED to share with you all (7 people who read this blog haha).

80s sunnies – as you may have noticed theres been a massive surge in 80s inspired fashion and it’s no less apparent in the sunnies department. Several years ago it was aviators that were the thing and now you’ve probably noticed Ray Bans are THE hot ticket look at the moment but that is set to change (although there’ll always be some losers who cling to them). No, no longer will raybans (which i noticed peaked in popularity when the “actors” in Twilight sported them) be the dominant sunglasses look, instead watch out for a style more like this:

oliver people frames

Oliver People frames

The style of frame is called Oliver People’s, and they will become quite big this summer, so watch out for them. If you like to stay ahead of trends I’d suggest picking up a pair, one place to go would be Incu men’s on Flinder’s Lane in the city.

So I work at G Star and the new drop crotch Scuba Elwoods have come in, and I tried them on. They’re not being put out on the floor yet so this is like a sneak peak at this very different (and cool) look that is becoming available. I doubt they’ll ever really catch on on in a huge way because they’re too different but no doubt you’ll see them around, worn by people who like to be different for the sake of it (people who think they are “avant garde”). Anyway they’re a sexy pair of jeans whether your wear them or not and I love G Star for making them.

So thats my summary of some thoughts I’ve had about various fashion topics recently, I’ve got a few more blog posts planned (about other stuff like eating for free on a Saturday morning) so keep your peepers peeled!
