Here’s a style I’ve discovered that’s really cool, very rock and roll (which is what I’m all about) and gives you a very unique look, especially if you’re a guy because apart from me I havn’t seen really anyone going for this look on the street. There are a few celebrities I found pictures of giving it a go (the *ugh* Olsen Twins) but at the moment this is a trend that hasn’t taken off meaning you can be ahead of everyone else! 🙂 That’s what I’m all about, because I hate it when people think I’m wearing something just because it’s trendy. I havn’t done that for yeeeaaaarrrss.

The fur vest look is very 80s hair metal looking, and I got mine off eBay, it cost me $15.00. Tooooooo easy! And I’ve already got heaps of compliments for it and rightly so because it’s a badass look. Glam – A history

So today I thought I’d briefly talk about the glam movement, which started out with glam rock but really can be applied to anything at all. It’s a really cool concept too, and something that I think a lot of people don’t quite get. Most of the time glam is associated with glam rock or glam metal, and you see it and think of big hair, fashionable androgyny, tight clothes, lots of shiny surfaces, etc. And really, on the surface that is what you see, but it’s not what it’s about.

To start with, let’s look at the word “glam”. We don’t tend to think about it, but it’s obviously short for glamor. So when it started back in the day with glam-rock, people were using the word to describe a type of rock music that was glamorous due to the nature of the way it was presented. If we look at Wikipedia (what other references do people use these days? Encyclopedia Britannica? I think not!) the first musician to adopt this style was Marc Bolan, a British rocker. He had a two piece band called TYRANNOSAURUS REX holy shit that is awesome.

Anyway this started the whole glam rock era made famous by musicians like Bowie, Gary Glitter, Elton John, Queen, Kiss and so on and so forth.

From this glam-rock influence, other genres adopted the glam style and made it their own. For example Gary Numan, a synthpop band, still styled himself in a very glam way despite his music not being rock at all. In recent years we still have glam styled bands like Marilyn Manson, which fall more into the genre of glam metal, although his Mechanical Animals era style was a direct reference to Bowie and Ziggy Stardust. He even took the androgyny thing so far that rumors still go around that he had a sex change and breast implants.

I wonder why?

Another band that comes to mind is Rammstein, the german industrialists. From simulated sex acts between the members of the band, to dragon masks that shoot fire, they are known for their industrial take on glamor that is decided darker, but still embraces the concept of making a traditional genre more glamorous.

All this leads me to my main point about glam, which so far hasn’t been touched on. We all recognize it, and probably think it’s quite cool, but we don’t really know how or why. And until recently, I was as much in the dark as you, dear reader. Then I happened to come across a quote by one of the members of Daft Punk which really illuminated the concept for me. When asked on whether the duo expressed themselves differently within their robotic suits, Bangalter (one of the two members) stated “No, we don’t need to. It’s not about having inhibitions. It’s more like an advanced version of glam, where it’s definitely not you.”

To me this is a revelation. What he’s saying is that glam is what it says it is, it’s a glamorized version of whatever it is you are adapting, including yourself, IE it’s not really you. It’s like a cool version of you, or the version of you you’ve always wanted to be, it can almost be like creating a character and assuming the persona of that character to act out your desires etc. I guess the difference that it made to me was that it means that glam is less about the outrageous outfits and hair, and more about the creating of an alternate personality or image to act out in some way. In that way you could apply the concept of glam to almost anything, and having understood what it is, utilise perhaps in a way that others havn’t. For example I would feel confident in saying that comedian Noel Fielding is a glam comedian, both in terms of his personal style, but also in the way his personality as perceived by the general public is almost larger than life.

All the artists I’ve mentioned above are perfect examples of this, say Manson (real name Brian Hugh Warner) for instance. He is a real person, and has a certain personality. But through his on-stage persona of Marilyn Manson, he can act out a different personality, a wilder, cooler, larger than life personality that people can focus their appreciation of the music on, and perhaps project themselves onto a bit. A good way to put it perhaps is that he tries to personify the music in a way he couldn’t otherwise, by becoming more than a musician, a literal interpretation of the music perhaps. I hope this is making sense.

Another example is Bowie, and in fact he really did assume different personae. He started with Ziggy Stardust and then moved onto the Thin White Duke, both variations of his personality he wanted to explore or highlight. The same goes for Kiss, Rammstein, and countless others, and in fact in some small way I would say that almost all musicians in some way employ the principle of glam to play up their image. In fact, I think it would be fair to say that glam is the definitively glamorous image of a person or group.

Meggings! Jacket! Shiny!

I’M SO FUCKING EXCITED!! Sorry, but I had to get that out of the way. I just couldn’t think of another way to start this post either, I’m not very creative. Why so excited, you ask? Well for several very good reasons actually, read on to find out ALL about it (in excruciating detail that no one cares for except for your truly).

Thanks to the advice of a mate, I went to Cotton On and bought myself a pair of meggings, something I’ve been meaning to do for quite a while. First off, they were only $25 so straight away really really cheap (compared to skinny jeans etc) and good value no matter how much or little I wear them. I make a point of that, if I’m trying a new look I’ll get the signature piece cheap and that way if it doesn’t pan out (I can’t make it work) it doesn’t really affect my bank balance anyway. No up front investment required. Good advice that.

I must say the experience of crossing over from the mens side of the store to the women’s side is odd (and somewhat intimidating), and I think my brother summed it up best when he described it as you “feeling like people will think you’re a pervert”. That’s exactly what it feels like too, that  you’re a pervert for wanting to wear women’s clothes and everyone’s looking at you and judging you and thinking “what a pervert”. I probably am though.

So I got the meggings and they’re fucking awesome, I dont think I’ve been this happy with a clothing purchase in ages (apart from all the other clothing I bought recently, they’re my best purchases in ages). They’re just a basic black wet look pair of tights and first thing that guys should know about women’s tights is that they are really comfortable (I’m wearing them now) and based on this and other observations I’m going to say that girls get all the best clothes. Also whenever I go into a store with women’s and mens clothing I prefer to check out the women’s stuff, mostly because of how it’s all shiny, but also because it’s all so much more interesting and exciting. And I miss that, I used to get it, that excitement when you had discovered a new style or look or whatever and how it opened up this whole vista of possibilities and you’d get this giddy feeling of excitement. Actually that perfectly sums up my first impression of the G-Star collection when it was first launched in Australia and I first saw it advertised (in mX if I remember rightly), it was like someone had reinvented jeans and we were on the forefront of a clothing revolution. Obviously that never happened and there are still bumpkins in the sticks wearing their Billabong jeans but I guess I got a bit swept up but I miss that feeling all the same. I get the same thing every now and again when I see a film or read a book or discover something new and exciting and fresh and unique. So this is the first item of clothing I’ve got to go toward my new style I want to pioneer, a mighty fusion of metal/glam/rocker looks into one sexy package (me, believe it or not).

I’ve also been wanting for a while now to grab a jacket that’s light and shiny, dressy so I can wear it out at night, or on cool days, and that’s smart and flexible. Also shiny, did I mention that? And I found this jacket at work, (G-Star, of course), it’s called the new tech jacket and its shiny electric blue, literally sex with sleeves (oh and pockets). So I’m pretty excited about that. To properly illustrate why I’m so excited I will now include pictures to inspire (and to make you jealous).
